Part of our mission at CEAOC is to provide mentoring for childbirth education students who are in the process of becoming certified. This mentoring process provides valuable experience for the student as well as one-on-one attention from another certified childbirth educator. The mentor is there to encourage, answer questions, and support the student in teaching techniques and subject matter.
When a student becomes aligned with a mentor, the mentor leads the student through a series of opportunities, allowing the student exposure to the teaching element of childbirth education.
First, the student observes one 4- to 5-week series taught by the mentor. The student takes notes and learns the various strategies for teaching different subjects. Second, the student observes another 4- to 5-week series and teaches 1 to 2 topics within that series. Finally, the student teaches a 4- to 5-week series while being observed by the mentor. This provides a safety net for the student's first teaching experience. The mentor provides valuable and constructive feedback as well as fills out the teaching evaluation forms required for certification. If the student desires, she may wish to teach an additional series to gain more experience. A second teaching series would also be observed by the mentor.

To sign up for a mentor, please contact our CEAOC Mentoring Coordinator. She will contact you to determine where you are located and assign you a mentor who teaches in close proximity. You will then contact the mentor and arrange the time when you can begin observing your first series.
Mentoring is available only to current CEAOC members. For more information on becoming a member, please see Membership.
Important Tip
For ICEA candidates: Once you have been partnered with a mentor, please obtain your mentor's ICEA member number. You will need this information when you call ICEA to verify your mentor's ability to be serve as an evaluator for your evaluated teaching series. This should be done before you begin your evaluated teaching series.
